On this day when we remember the victims and heroes of 9/11 there are far too many who believe that the tragedy was the doing of our own government. Why do so many believe the most outlandish conspiracy theories? What is it about our psyches that make some of us so vulnerable to the fever? Why are conspiracy theories so attractive to some?
I have a theory. I believe that conspiracy theories are so attractive because the let us blame the people we hate the most with the crimes that most upset us. When was the last time you saw someone put forth a conspiracy about someone they liked? Add in the intoxicating effect of forbidden knowledge (or at least the perception of it) and the attraction is just too much for some to resist.
Unfortunately reasoned argument is no antidote to those that have caught the fever. But if you want to give it a try, one of the best resources for debunking 9/11 conspiracies can be found at Popular Mechanics.
