Facebook Public vs Internet Public

There is this article from eWeek about Facebook making it’s user’s information available to search engines. Some are concerned about the privacy implications of this. Critics are complaining that this will result in the loss of privacy as information that was previously available only to Facebook members is now available to the internet at large.

I suppose that this is true in a strict technical sense. Still it’s a thin sliver of privacy to lose. I personally don’t consider anything that can be viewed by 40 million people to be any more private than something that can be viewed by everyone. To me “Facebook Public” is equivalent to “Internet Public”.

The moral is don’t think you have privacy just because your garden has walls. Unless it’s a really small garden. And there is a gate. And only you have the key.
